Alliance joins AgriZeroNZ to accelerate emissions-reduction tools for New Zealand’s red meat sector

5 Oct 2026

Alliance has invested in AgriZeroNZ to accelerate practical emissions-reduction tools that respond to global customer expectations, protect access to key export markets and support farmer productivity and profitability.

The move comes as AgriZeroNZ’s partners and the Government commit a further $117 million to the public-private partnership, taking total funding to $308 million.

Alliance joins The a2 Milk Company, ANZ, ANZCO, ASB, BNZ, Fonterra, Rabobank, Ravensdown, Silver Fern Farms, Synlait and Farmlands as industry investors. Together, the private-sector partners own 50 per cent of AgriZeroNZ.

Alliance Chief Executive Niall Browne says investing in AgriZeroNZ reflects the expectations of Alliance’s global customers and consumers, and the need to safeguard the long-term strength of New Zealand’s red meat sector.

“Many of our major customers are increasingly seeking credible, measurable emissions reductions from their suppliers, creating a clear market signal for continued progress.

Our ability to demonstrate progress will be important to protecting access to key export markets, strengthening customer relationships and maintaining the premium position of New Zealand red meat.”

Dawn Meats’ experience shows that reducing emissions requires sustained investment, practical action and change across the supply chain, said Mr Browne.

“Through Dawn’s Plan Four Zero strategy, we are targeting operational net zero by 2050, while working to strengthen the long-term resilience of our company and support the prosperity of the farming businesses and communities involved in our sector. Alliance will also shortly announce its own programme.

“Through AgriZeroNZ, Alliance can bring insight to our New Zealand farmers to help develop a range of practical, science-backed tools.

“Farmers will be able to choose the solutions that best suit their farming systems as those tools become available, while the sector builds the evidence needed to demonstrate credible progress to customers and protect its competitiveness in key markets.”
